The theme of a comedy character can be found across ballets choreographed by Frederick Ashton, and in Cinderella, he brought two of the worlds most famous step-sisters to life with his signature blend of tongue-in-cheek comedy and classic choreography. Vain, vapid and obsessed with status, the step-sisters couldn’t be more different to Cinderella. In this introduction to the delightfully mean-spirited duo, Senior Répétiteur and Principal Character Artist Gary Avis discusses what the role means to him. First Soloist James Hay and Principal Character Artist Bennet Gartside explain how they follow in the footsteps of our founding choreographer Frederick Ashton, who originated the role alongside Robert Helpmann, while taking a modern approach to the characters.
