The Golden Herald Awards recognizes outstanding seniors in Manatee County. Over 4600 students seniors have been honored since the program started in 1978 by the Bradenton Herald. These students are honored for their commitment to school and community. Each participating school is invited to nominate up to two seniors in each of the fifteen categories for a total of 30 nominations per school. Nominees are selected on the basis of achievement, leadership and character and must have the equivalent of a B average in classes relating to their category. The winners are chosen after being interviewed by 45 judges who are community leaders themselves. The awards ceremony honors the winner with a cash award and trophy and nominee a certificate of merit in each category in a staged performance.
